Headaches, Migraines, and Essential Oils

Many individuals that suffer from headaches and migraines are interested in finding natural solutions. A migraine is a common type of headache that may occur with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity and throbbing pain in the head.  Essential oils provide individuals with natural solutions for headaches and migraines.

Here are some common essential oils that will assist with headaches and migraines:   Basil, Lavender, Marjoram, Peppermint, Roman Chamomile, Spearmint, Wintergreen, and Ylang Ylang.

Essential Oils are most effective if they are applied when symptoms first begin.  It may take time to determine which oils work for you, but once you do it will be a sweet victory.  I suggest that you apply essential oils diluted on the neck, shoulders, and temples (avoid the eyes), to address the muscle tension.  Top oils to help with muscle tension are Basil, Marjoram, Peppermint, Spearmint, and Wintergreen.  I also suggest that you apply Lavender, Roman Chamomile or Ylang Ylang to the back of the neck and shoulders to help calm emotions and release stress.  If you are using an essential oil that indicates that it is safe for ingestion, I would also suggest that you put Frankincense on the roof of your mouth and rub a drop on your temples and the back of your neck.

For nausea you can use Ginger, Peppermint, Fennel or Roman Chamomile. Ginger is my top choice.  You can apply it to your chest and abdomen diluted.  If you are using an essential oil that can be taken internally, you can put 2 drops in a veggie capsule and swallow it.  Always check your labels and do your research before your ingest essential oils.

Here are some recipes below:

Essential Oils for Focus

I have been doing research into different oils that help improve focus and concentration. I have children that really seems to struggle with this issue and it makes doing homework very challenging.

Back to school is upon us and it is time for this mamma to get serious about helping my children. The problem I am running into is that the best oils for focus and concentration are oils that my children will not use, because they cannot stand the smell.  The top oils that improve concentration are Vetiver and Basil.  Many people like the scents of these oils, but my children will not use them.

So, I have been on a journey to find oils that my children will use, enjoy the smell, and by default improve school work.  Here is the list of oils that I have discovered assist with focus.

The best thing to do is smell the oils and determine which ones improve your concentration or focus.  Once you have determined the oils that work best for you then you apply those oils to the bottom of your feet twice a day or diffuse them.

I plan to put the blend into a roller bottle, so that my kids can reapply it at school, as needed.  They may end up wearing it as a perfume or cologne if the fragrance is nice enough.  I fully intend to start diffusing the blend at least 15 minutes before we start studying to help provide a conducive environment.

Wising you all success in finding the best blend!   Happy Oiling!

Marjoram Essential Oil

Marjoram essential oil is a wonderful oil.  It is steam distilled from the leaf.   It's top properties are antibacterial, antifungal, antispasmodic, digestive stimulant, and a sedative.

Marjoram essential oil can be used aromatically, internally, and topically. Please verify the use of the oil on the bottle that you purchased.  If it is a lower quality oil, it will not be safe for internal use.

Marjoram essential oil is a versatile oil.  It can be used for digestive issues, muscular issues, respiratory issues, fungal issues and more.

Common uses for Marjoram essential oil are boils, bronchitis, carpal tunnel, cold sores, colic, constipation, croup, headaches, high blood pressure, migraines, muscle aches & pains, muscular fatigue, muscular spasms, pancreatitis, and ringworm.

For topical applications, I strongly recommend that you dilute with a carrier oil to increase the area of application, reduce evaporation of the essential oil, and to protect your skin from sensitivity. If it is for a muscular issue, I suggest using a heating pad on the area after you apply the diluted essential oil. It helps penetrate the oils into your muscles.  I like to use Marjoram, Lemongrass and Cinnamon together for muscular issues.  Cinnamon is a hot oil, so you must dilute heavily.

For internal use, please verify that the essential oil you purchased is safe for ingesting.  To ingest you would put a few drops in a veggie cap. If you are using marjoram to reduce your high blood pressure, I suggest using a veggie cap with 2 drops marjoram and 2 drops lemongrass.

Safety Precautions:  I strongly recommend diluting marjoram with a carrier oil, particularly for sensitive skin.  If you are pregnant, please consult your physician before using.

As always, please do your own research!  Please ensure that you are purchasing your oils from a reputable company that does extensive testing to verify the quality and purity of the essential oils.

Spotlight on Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender is steam distilled from the flowers.  Lavender Essential Oil can be used Aromatically, Internally, or Topically.  It is safe for everyone to use from babies to the elderly.  As with any oil, I always suggest that you dilute it, so that your body never develops a sensitivity to the oil. However, many people use Lavender essential oil "neat" on the skin. Always do a spot test.  Lavender essential oil blends well with Black Pepper, Cirus Oils, Clary Sage, Marjoram, Thyme, and Vetiver. Lavender is one of the oils that I carry in my purse for life's little emergencies.

I have used Lavender essential oil to stop my daughter's nose bleeds, by applying the oil on the outside of her nose.  Lavender essential oil is also great for skin irritations from cuts and scrapes to bug bites and poison ivy. It is a wonderfully soothing oil, so it is perfect to use at bedtime.  Here are a few other great ways to use Lavender.

Please do your research before you purchase or use essential oils. Make sure you are purchasing high quality oils from a company that is reputable and explains in full detail how they test the oils and what test they use to determine quality and purity.

Spotlight: Arborvitae Essential Oil

I thought it might be fun to start doing a spotlight on different essential oils.

Today I am going to focus on Arborvitae.

Arborvitae is steam distilled from the wood, needles, twigs.
Country of Origin:  Typically Canada

It is also referred to as Western Red Cedar or the "Tree of Life" . You will see oil companies refer to it as Arborvitae, Thuja, Thuja Plicata, or Western Red Cedar.

Arborvitae has a very woodsy, earthy scent. It is know for repelling insects, so it is a great essential oil to put in your homemade bug sprays.  It is also a wonderful oil to put on bug bites. It helps reduce the itching and swelling.

Summer is here and so are the BUGS

Summer has finally arrived and I am thrilled to see sunshine and warm weather.  Summer brings camping, swimming, family trips and more.  It is the time of year that sunscreen and bug spray seem to be out on my kitchen table and ready for use every day.  This year we are utilizing more natural products to assist us during these warmer months.  I have created my own bug spray with essential oils. Since our skin is our front line defense against disease and harsh chemicals, I am glad to know that I am making strides at reducing the number of toxins that my skin absorbs everyday.

Did you know that different essential oils naturally repel certain types of bugs?  Mosquitoes hate cinnamon, lavender, lemongrass and vetiver essential oil, spiders hate peppermint essential oil, gnats hate patchouli and ticks don't like eucalyptus essential oil. Depending on what type of bug you need to repel will determine what essential oils you will use in your bug spray.  I like to start my bug spray with a repellent blend, because it has citronella, cedarwood, eucalyptus, fir needle, and other beneficial essential oils.

Here is my Bug Spray Recipe:

4 oz spray bottle

10 drops Repellent Blend
10 drops Lemongrass
4 drops Peppermint
1/4 cup Witch Hazel

Add all of the essential oils and Witch Hazel to the spray bottle. Top off with water.  Shake well before each use.

If you want or need your bug spray to be stronger, you can use up to 35 drops of essential oil in your spray bottle.

Happy Oiling!

Seasonal Threats are in Bloom

It is that time of year again....the flowers are blooming, the grass is growing, and the wind is spreading the pollen everywhere.  Many of you LOVE this time of year. For those of us with seasonal issues,  we DREAD this time of year. Our bodies are under attack from all of the pollen, grass, trees, and flowers that are in bloom.

Before Essential Oils, my head was always full of gunk and liquid that made me foggy and exhausted.  Now with Essential Oils I have a way to address these issues naturally with three amazing essential oils:   Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint.

Lemon essential oils primary therapeutic properties are antidepressant, antiseptic, detoxifier, and an immune enhancer.   I use the Lemon oil to to help my body get rid of the environmental threat and to boost my immune system.

Lavender essential oils primary therapeutic properties are analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, anti-viral, and a sedative. I use it to relieve the pain and pressure in my sinus cavities and temples as well as to reduce the inflammation.

Peppermint essential oils primary therapeutic properties are analgesic, anti-inflammatory, decongestant, expectorant, and a fever reducer.  I use Peppermint oil to relieve the pain and pressure, promote clear breathing and to aid with any stomach upset that might occur with sinus drainage.

When I am faced with a seasonal threat, I like to put two drops each of lemon, lavender, and peppermint in my diffuser to help me breathe. If I need added support, I will use a carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil (FCO), and apply a drop of peppermint on my chest to assist with respiratory function.  I will also put a drop of lemon and lavender oil in my palm mixed with FCO and then dab my finger in it and massage my cheeks and temples to relieve any muscle tension in my face and head. This always provides me with immediate relief from the pain and pressure.  After you have used your essential oils, please make sure that you wash your hands to remove the essential oils.

If you are suffering from severe congestion, you can put a drop of peppermint oil in your palm and then cup your hand over your nose to breathe in the oil.  Please make sure you close your eyes. Peppermint oil can make your eyes water. Wishing you a blessed Spring.

Essential Oils in your bath

Many people enjoy relaxing in the bath.  Did you know that you can use essential oils in the bathtub?  You can make your own bath salts or bath oils.  Bath salts are the most cleansing and healing of all the aromatherapy bath recipes because they are natural detoxifiers and pain relievers. Adding essential oils to your bath salt recipes provides even more healing benefits.

Most bath salt recipes utilize Epsom salt, kosher salt, and baking soda.  Epsom salt's magnesium content helps to draw impurities from the body, relieves muscle aches and pains, and disperses essential oils.  Baking soda balances an over acidic system and it is refreshing, energizing, and softening to the skin.  Individuals that have blood pressure issues or are diabetic should replace the Epsom salt with sea salt and consult their physician prior to using.

Bath Oils are a great way to nourish and moisturize the skin.  Add Bath Oils immediately before getting in and swish it around. You will need to swish around the oils every few minutes in the tub, because oil and water do not mix.  Essential Oils need to be put into a carrier oil to minimize the risk of sensitization to the skin, because the essential oils can gather into one spot by your skin.  Do not ever put essential oils directly in the water.

What if you do not like taking baths or have loved ones that can no longer get in the bath.  Do a foot soak instead!  Whether in the bath or doing a foot soak, soak for a minimum of 20 - 30 minutes.
Here are a few great blends to consider making:

Bye Bye Head Lice - Essential Oils to the rescue!!

I have to be honest and say that I never thought I would be writing about head lice. Head lice hit my home with a vengeance. I am embarrassed to say that I thought it was dandruff. I knew that there had been issues at school and I had been checking my children's hair every few days and never saw anything! Eventually I started noticing little white flakes on my daughter's hair. I told her to start using her dandruff shampoo again.

Then it happened!  One night when I was checking her hair, I saw bugs!  It took everything in me to stay CALM.  I wanted to jump off the bed and run away.  I HATE bugs.  I calmly called her father into the bedroom and had him check it out. We suspected it was lice. I immediately went to the Internet and began educating myself about these nasty little bugs. It turns out the "dandruff flakes" were really lice eggs (nits).  GROSS!!

I started looking up the effectiveness of the OTC solutions to discover that they have limited success at killing lice eggs. Articles went on to say that the lice were becoming resistant to these solutions, just like bacteria was becoming resistant to antibiotics.  My husband and I discussed it and decided to try the essential oils first and then if that did not work, we would discuss our next step.

After doing some research, I created my own head lice concoction.  I mixed fractionated coconut oil with Lavender, Lemon, Geranium, and Melaleuca essential oils.   For every two tablespoons of fractionated coconut oil, I used 5 drops of Lavender, Lemon, Geranium, and Melaleuca each.  I made an entire bottle of the mix.  I applied the mix to my daughters head and made sure that it was on her entire scalp.  I then used a flea comb brush, yes it is for my dog, to start pulling the lice out of her hair.  Everything I read, said to leave the mix in for a minimum of a 1/2 hour to an hour. I spent that entire time combing through her hair and pulling out lice. I did not have any success at pulling off the lice eggs (nits).  After about an hour she took a shower and used 2 drops of melaleuca mixed in with her shampoo  I then put the flea comb through her hair one more time.  We of course had to change the sheets, launder the towels, pull the stuffed animals, etc.

Everyday for three days we used the head lice concoction. After I ran out of the first batch, I decided to switch to olive oil instead of fractionated coconut oil, because it is cheaper and I read that it is more effective at drowning the lice.   The third night, we purchased a disposable shower cap and had her keep the essential oil mix in her hair all night long.

I am happy to report that this has been a very effective way to treat the head lice.  She does not have any active lice and the lice eggs are disappearing.  We continue to add melaleuca to her shampoo every night when she showers.   We have also had everyone else in the house add melaleuca to their shampoo to prevent the lice from spreading.  We will continue to comb through her hair for the next few weeks to ensure no new lice appeared and we will treat with the essential oil mix if needed. Similar to fleas, head lice is very time consuming to eradicate.  New eggs take roughly 7-10 days to hatch, so we will be monitoring the situation very closely for the next few weeks.

When we first learned that there was lice in her class, I told her that having her hair in a ponytail makes it harder to get lice.  She ignored me or took her hair down during the day at school.  Needless to say, she is very eager to get her hair put up every morning now.

I encourage all of you to do your own research and utilize whatever method works best for you.  I am so grateful that this worked for my family.

Essential Oils and Phototoxicity

Did you know that certain oils are phototoxic? All of the citrus oils are considered generally phototoxic. The method of extraction (cold pressed or steam distillation) of the oil determines the phototoxicity.  To be on the safe side, if  you do not know if it was cold pressed or steam distilled, I would consider it phototoxic. Essential oils that are cold pressed are phototoxic, while steam distilled oils are generally not phototoxic.

Phototoxicity is a reaction on the skin to sunlight or tanning beds due to an agent, like essential oils, being applied  to the skin. A phototoxic reaction can cause burning, blistering, and discoloration (abnormally dark patches and red areas) on the skin. Some essential oils are termed “phototoxic,” since they increase the likelihood of a phototoxic reaction.

Here is a list of essential oils that are considered phototoxic:

Lemon                                                    Invigorating Blend
Lime                                                       Joyful Blend
Orange                                                   Massage Blend
Bergamot                                               Metabolic Blend
Grapefruit                                               Protective Blend
Cleansing Blend                                     Respiratory Blend

If you apply these essential oils to an area covered by clothing and then go out in the sun, you'll be fine. The phototoxic reaction only occurs if the skin, where the essential oil is applied, is exposed to the sun (or tanning booth). Obviously, the longer the skin is exposed to the sun, the more harm it can do.

Diluting the essential oils in fractionated coconut oil or another carrier oil, reduces the risk of phototoxicity.

Allergy season is here to stay!

We are almost at the end of April and allergy season is in full swing in my house.  Running nose, congestion, post nasal drip, cough..... We have it all.  In the past I would have been medicating everyone in the house with Zyrtec and Tylenol Sinus & Congestion.   Unfortunately, they would only help relieve the symptoms temporarily and we would be right back where we started and usually be into a full blown sinus infections, bronchitis, etc.

Now that I have been introduced to essential oils, I have new remedies to try with my family.  We have the allergy bomb which is 2 drops each of lavender, lemon, and peppermint in a shot glass with water.  You swish the water around in your mouth and then you swallow.  Immediate relief occurs!!  It is truly amazing. Even the hubby loves this one!

I also have seasonal blend pills.  It is the allergy bomb in a soft gel that is easy to take on the go.  These are my new best friend!  They work great on my 7 year old daughter as well.

Plus I also do a sinus rinse as needed.  I personally use the squeeze bottle.  I add one packet of the rinse mix and 1 drop of melaluca diluted with fractionated coconut oil on my cheeks.  This has helped tremendously with my chronic sinus headaches and pressure.  If I am feeling congestion and pressure in the morning I will do this sinus rinse and it gets the gunk out of my nose and the melaluca fights off any mold or other allergens in my sinus cavities.  I also use this one on my 7 year old daughter.  It has made a huge difference for both of us.

I cant' say enough about how therapeutic grade essential oils are changing our lives.  I ran to Walgreen's the other day to get some batteries and I realized when I was walking in that I had not been there to buy OTC medicines for probably two months.  That is huge in my house!! Walgreens has always been my go to place for sinus meds, indigestion, reflux, headache, etc.  How awesome is it that I have not needed to replace any OTC.  Instead I have been able to use my all natural essential oils (allergy bomb, seasonal blend pills, digestive blend, soothing blend etc).

I am so grateful that I don't have to keep going to the doctor to treat my seasonal issues all the time!!

A boy, a broken arm, and essential oils!

My son broke his left arm at the elbow joint yesterday at Washington Park.  We immediately rushed him to Memorial Medical Center.  While we got there within 15 minutes and were given a bed in the hallway right away, it took a very long time to get treatment.

You could tell as soon as he fell it was broken.  There was never a question in our mind about that.  It was very clearly out of place, and looked terribly painful.

So what does any mother with oils do?  You pull out your key chain and see what you have to use.  I had Frankincense on me, so I immediately started gently applying that to the elbow and put some on his head and neck.  Chris thought I was crazy, but I told him Frankincense is amazing for pain and it calms you.

Thankfully, I had recently just gotten a second key chain and filled it with calming oils, because we all have our issues.  Ylang Ylang is my son's favorite oil and you can always tell that it visibly clams him, so I whipped out my Ylang Ylang and made him sniff it, like smelling salts and then applied it to his chest.  He calmed down right away.

Once he found out that he was going to need X-Rays and that he should probably have a shot, he went into full melt down mode.   I immediately pulled out my calming  and grounding blend and began applying it down his spine, wrist and ears.   I also put Bergamot on his spine, and more Ylang Ylang. It did help calm him down, but at that point he still had no pain medicine.

We were probably in the ER for 2 ½ -3 hours before my son received his IV and the pain medicine.  When the time came, he was so brave and did not cry while they put the IV in him.  They had to stick him twice to find a good vein.  Apparently, he takes after his momma and has crappy veins! After it was all over, he was very agitated and upset about getting the X-Rays.  I applied more grounding blend and calming blend to help him calm down.  It worked.  We were moved to a room shortly after that and then he was immediately called for X-Rays.  He was a real trooper with that one too.   He came back to the room and watched TV.   This was probably around 10:00 pm at this point.  My poor baby had not eaten since lunch time and they would not let him eat or drink, just in case he needed surgery.  Unfortunately, I don’t have an oil for that!

We sat and waited for a long time to find out the results of his X-Ray.  The ER Doctor finally came in and told us that it was broken.  We did not get to look at X-Rays.  He described it as being broken in an iceberg shape.  Clean in the way it broke, but not in a good spot.   He informed us that since it is broken, that they had to consult with the Orthopedic Doctor at St. John’s to find out our course of treatment.  That was the moment we found out we would have to be moved to St. John’s at some point.   As soon as LJ figured out that he was not going home and that he had to ride in an ambulance, he lost it. I mean screaming hysterically, kicking, swatting his arms all around.  It was ugly!!! He just wanted to go home!  I pulled out the Frankincense and put it on his head and ears to try and calm him down.  When I tried to put more Ylang Ylang on his chest he threw a fit, so I stopped. He did calm back down and watch TV, while we waited for more information.

They came back and told us that he had to get a soft cast put on his arm before they would let him ride in the ambulance.  Another tantrum.   More Frankincense.   We got the soft cast put on and he was crying because it was too tight.  They had to adjust the wrap and he calmed down some.

When it was finally time to transport him in the ambulance it was horrific.  I was so distraught at this point.  It was almost midnight, my child was still in pain, he was hungry and thirsty, we still did not know what was going to happen with his elbow, and he did not want to go in the ambulance.  He just wanted to go in daddy’s truck! It was a nightmare.  I felt bad for everyone else in the ER.  He was screaming and kicking, and hitting.  It was like watching a wild animal that had been trapped and could not get free.   I had to physically pick him up and try and get him in the gurney without dropping him or bumping his elbow.   No easy task!  Once he was on the gurney they could not get or keep him buckled.  It took 6 adults to hold him down and get him buckled in the gurney. 1 doctor, 1 nurse, 2 EMT’s, and 2 parents.  I found out in transit to the ambulance that I could not ride with him.  They were going to allow me to ride up front with the driver.  This was the best they could do.   Needless to say, it was determined last minute that I could ride in the back with LJ and the EMT.   He unbuckled himself very quickly, and screamed the whole way.

We arrived at Saint John’s Hospital shortly after midnight.  The ER was not sure why we were there and then we found out from a nurse that surgery was waiting for him.  Wait, What!!!!!! That is when mamma bear came out.  We had not even seen a doctor, had no clue that surgery was urgent.   Had it been earlier in the evening, it would have been a really great moment to apply grounding balance and calming blend.  Needless to stay, I refused to sign any forms or do anything else until we talked to the doctor!   The ER did not even have any of his information, so they did not know what medicine he had been given, when he received it, the dosage, height, weight, etc.  I was so upset, there were no words to describe. At least they wanted to get him pain medicine to help calm him down.  Thankfully my baby finally fell asleep!  I talked to a surgical resident and then talked to the Doctor and then consented to surgery.

It was definitely a night that I will never forget.  Watching your child suffer, is one of the worst feelings as a parent.  I am so very thankful that I had essential oils with me to assist him, while we waited for modern medical treatment.   This was clearly a situation where modern medicine was critical for his treatment and recovery.  However, I will never discount the relief certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils provided to my son during the most traumatic ordeal of his life!
